001 Solomon Box
(1.) Bael.—The First Principal Spirit is a King ruling in the East, called Bael. He maketh thee to go Invisible. He ruleth over 66 Legions of Infernal Spirits. He appeareth in divers shapes, sometimes like a Cat, sometimes like a Toad, and sometimes like a Man, and sometimes all these forms at once. He speaketh hoarsely. This is his character which is used to be worn as a Lamen before him who calleth him forth, or else he will not do thee homage.
A Solomon Box is a sealed assemblage work. All box contents have been carefully secured with wire, wax, fabric, paper, seals and sigils, and the box itself has been further sealed. Every detail of the seals, sigils, text fragments, and box contents has layers of meaning. Box 001/01.A is the artist’s box. Boxes 01 through 05 are available below, and Boxes 06 through 10 are forthcoming. There will only ever be 11 Bael Boxes.
Each box is constructed as a closed system: handmade box, found photographs, text fragments, sigils, reliced materials, and a central object are composed, enclosed, and fixed in relation to one another.
These are not decorative objects and not modular sculptures. Once completed, the contents are not altered. Meaning emerges from internal structure, sequence, and constraint rather than narrative explanation.
This work sits alongside my painting but follows a different logic: containment rather than expansion.
The box may remain sealed; opening it is left to the discretion of its eventual owner.
These boxes are handmade and assembled and contain:
a primary artifact (a found object that has been hand-altered and reworked)
an accompanying object
a photographic subset
a disarticulated mechanism
a seal matrix
sigils and invocations
